With our hand over our heart,University of Idaho Library Special Collections and Archives salutes the flag of the United States today, Flag Day. On June 14, 1777 the Continental Congress adopted a flag bearing 13 white stars on a circular blue background against 13 red and white stripes as the symbol for the new Republic.The 4-H Club Congress meeting at the University of Idaho in the 1960’s began and ended each day with a flag ceremony.
President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 observing June 14 as Flag Day but it was not until August of 1949 that President Harry Truman signed legislation creating an annual observance every June 14. In 1966, Congress requested the president also issue a proclamation each year naming the week in which June 14 falls each year as National Flag Week.
